More about Benebellum
Hyperpigmentation and melasma
In case the skin produces excessive pigmentation, we speak of hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is most common in women with (lightly) toned skin (skin types 4-6). Research shows that several risk factors play a role in the development of hyperpigmentation, including genetic predisposition, sunlight, gender, age, hormones, pregnancy, thyroid disorders, medication and cosmetic products.
If the hyperpigmentation has a hormonal cause, it is called melasma (also known as 'pregnancy mask'). Melasma is characterised by dark, irregularly shaped patches on cheek, nose, upper lip and/or forehead. Hyperpigmentation or melasma can be superficial (epidermal) or deeper in the skin (dermal) or a combination of both.
What causes hyperpigmentation?
The underlying cause of hyperpigmentation is excessive activity of melanocytes (the pigment-forming cells). This overactivity can have several causes: not only do melanocytes (certain type of skin cells) get signals to start producing large amounts of melanin, it can also be caused by collagen breakdown, skin barrier abnormalities, oxidative stress, sunlight and so-called'blue light' (from screens).
Active ingredients against hyperpigmentation
Years of research into the cause and treatment of hyperpigmentation and melasma have demonstrated the effectiveness of the following ingredients, which are part of Benebellum products:
1. Tranexamic acid is an amino acid that provides a 'lightening' effect and reduces redness caused by vascular ingrowth.
2. Hexylresocinol is an organic substance that inhibits pigment production, has an anti-inflammatory effect and an analgesic effect.
3. Vitamins A, C, E are strong antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory effects and stimulate cell renewal, wound healing and collagen formation. Pigmentation is also inhibited by application to the skin of concentrated vitamin C.
4. Blue light filter protects the skin from the harmful influence of HEV (High Energy Visible) light produced, for example, by display screens, which has a large share (8x more than uva/uvb/uvc) in the occurrence of light-induced skin damage.
Benebellum Treatment
The Benebellum product line consists of products for treatments performed by the SkinsSensible dermatologist (professional) and products for home use by yourself (cosmetics). This combined approach leads to visible results in the fight against hyperpigmentation.
Treatment by dermatologist
SkinSensible's dermatologist will perform the following treatments:
- Chemical peelings
Chemical peels with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) remove dead skin cells and provide a controlled renewal of skin cells. This makes the skin more even, pigmentation spots decrease, pores become less visible and the skin will rejuvenate. - Microneedling
Microneedling is the creation of tiny holes in the skin combined with the administration of a solution of tranexamic acid and antioxidants. Through this treatment, the skin undergoes changes needed to lighten the skin.
To treat hyperpigmentation, 1 or 2 treatment sessions are done at the clinic where both the above treatments are performed. The time between treatment sessions is 2 to 4 weeks.
Each treatment session consists of:
- Cleaning with TX Foam
- Microneedling with TX Solution,
- TCA peeling with Lumpeel
- Calming with anti-inflammatory Lumpost Post Peel cream
- Care with day cream Fulgora 50
Home products
Pickled skin is vulnerable as well as prone to pigment reappearance. That is why treatment with home products is an important part of the Benebellum anti-pigmentation treatment plan:
- TX Foam Cleanser
- Lumpost anti-inflammatory post-peel cream
- Lumina Vitamin C serum 18%
- Lumina Vit A+E night cream
- Fulgora SPF 50 day cream
Results
To achieve effective skin improvement, a fair amount of the epidermis is replaced by new cells:
Day 1: Immediately after peeling, your skin feels dry but not much is visible yet (sometimes some redness).
Day 2: Your skin feels tight and dry. Dark spots may be visible where there was pigment.
Day 3-5: Between days 3 and 5 you usually molt the most. The shedding starts, first around the mouth and from there onwards. Any spots also "fall" off your skin.
Afterwards, only some remaining skin will show in the hairline and around the nose. Your new skin is visibly improved, smoother and glowing.

FAQs
What can I expect when visiting SkinSensible?
Your visit starts with a free consultation to discuss your cosmetic wishes, your health and the Benebellum anti-pigment treatment. If you decide on the treatment, we will guide you step by step and make the treatment as comfortable as possible,
How can I maximise results from Benebellum treatment?
Carefully follow instructions from the aftercare brochure:
- Stop using your own day and night creams. These creams often contain irritants, such as perfumes and acids, which can lead to inflammatory reactions.
- Avoid high-temperature activities (such as sauna, hammam, tanning bed, sunbathing) for up to 2 weeks after a peeling
- Do not pull loose skin; this will damage the new skin layer and may cause wounds, which in turn can lead to pigmentation.
- We recommend from the first peeling session until two weeks after the last one, not using peels or scrubs at home or undergoing such treatments at another clinic or beauty salon.
Does a Benebellum treatment hurt?
The TCA chemical peel and tranexamic acid microneedling performed by the SkinSensible dermatologist may cause some discomfort (burning sensation) during the treatment. Care with the Benebellum post peel products minimises discomfort after treatment.
When can I resume my daily activities?
In principle, you can resume your activities immediately after the peeling, but the following effects of the peeling will be visible for the first week after treatment:
- Day 1: The day after peeling, your skin feels dry but not much is visible yet (sometimes redness).
- Day 2: Your skin feels tight and dry. Dark spots may be visible where there was pigment.
- Days 3-5: Between days 3 and 5, you usually shed the most. The shedding starts, first around the mouth and from there onwards. Any spots also "fall" off your skin.
- Afterwards, only some remaining skin will show in the hairline and around the nose. Your new skin will be visibly improved, more even and radiant!
