More about Botox
What is Botox?
Botulinum toxin (better known as Botox) is a purified protein that relaxes the facial muscles. It is injected in small amounts to soften existing wrinkles and reduce future wrinkle formation. Botulinum toxin is a medicine. Therefore, only authorised botulinum toxin preparations may be used in the Netherlands. Bocouture by Merz contains fewer additives due to the unique way it has been purified. This is why we prefer Bocouture.
How does Botox work?
Botulinum toxin is injected into the facial muscles to block nerve impulses. This weakens the contraction of those muscles and makes them less active. Depending on the dosage, wrinkles around the treated muscles soften or disappear altogether. Botulinum toxin also works preventively. By relaxing facial muscles, fewer or no wrinkles develop on the skin in that area. The effect of botox lasts for 3 to 4 months, depending on dosage, location and personal factors.
Where does Botox work?
The frown line is the vertical wrinkle between the eyebrows that deepens as the eyebrows tighten. This can cause a sullen look. Botox injections are very effective to reduce the frown.
Crow's feet are clusters of wrinkles on the sides of the eyes. Tightening the eyes, frowning and (smiling) smiles deepen them and make you look older. Treatment with botox is very effective to reduce crow's feet.
Forehead lines are horizontal folds above the eyebrows. They appear when raising the eyebrows or when we look surprised. Botox reduces forehead lines.
The neck muscles (platysma) are very strong, so over time the neck slackens and the jawline sags down. These vertical muscles become visible when you push down the corners of your mouth. Treating these muscles with botox reduces this sagging.
These predominantly vertical lines appear when we tip our lips. As we age, they remain visible even with relaxed lips. Early on, they can be reduced with botox.
In some people, the upper gums become visible when they smile (also known as a 'gummy smile') This can be reduced with just two small injections of botulinum toxin.
Overactivity of the chin muscle can cause small pits or irregularities on the chin. By loosening those muscles with botox , they diminish.
Some people suffer from drooping corners of the mouth that give a sad appearance. Treating the muscle that pulls them down with botox makes you look happier again.
Nasal lines run from the sides of the nose towards the corners of the mouth. They are created by smiling and frowning. Some people are naturally more prone to nose lines than others. Botox can reduce them.
Migraines can be reduced by relaxing various muscles with botulinum toxin. A minor treatment involves the temples and forehead. In an extended treatment, neck and shoulder muscles are also included.
Nighttime grinding occurs due to excessive activity of the chewing muscles. It can damage the teeth and sometimes give an angular jawline. The muscles responsible can be temporarily relaxed with botulinum toxin.

Botox treatment
Consultation
During the consultation, the doctor will discuss your cosmetic wishes and related treatment techniques and advise you on the best way to achieve an effective and natural result. You will receive information on the expected effect, possible side effects, risks, and the costs. The doctor will draw up your individual treatment plan and you will sign the 'informed consent' with detailed information about the treatment.
Treatment
Based on the treatment plan, we prepare the optimal dosage of botulinum toxin solution. If you have indicated that you want a very subtle effect, we halve the usual amount. This is also called a "mini Botox". We then ask you to make some specific movements with your face so we can properly locate the muscle and then inject the botulinum toxin into the muscle with a fine needle. An average treatment takes 15 minutes and may cause some discomfort or mild pain.
After the treatment
You can carry on with your daily activities as normal after the treatment. However, we do ask you not to wear make-up or go to the gym or sauna for the first 12 hours.
Side effects
Side effects that may occur with botox treatment are minimal bleeding or bruising at the injection site (pinprick), local redness of the skin, local swelling of the skin (oedema) and headache. These symptoms disappear in most cases within one to a few days (a bruise takes a little longer). If you have any doubts about a side effect, always contact your doctor immediately.
Result
The effect of botox lasts for 3 to 4 months. The duration of the effect varies from person to person and depends on the dosage, age, skin type and lifestyle.
