More about IPL
What is IPL?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, a treatment method using controlled intense flashes of light that are absorbed into the skin by pigment or blood vessels. This provides targeted heating and breakdown of unwanted structures, without damage to surrounding skin tissues. The Lumenis Stellar M22 is a powerful and versatile IPL platform, using different light filters to treat specific indications.
How does IPL work?
An IPL handpiece emits flashes of light that work at different depths in the skin. The effect depends on the indication and the specific filter used for it:
- Vascular problems
The light is absorbed by haemoglobin in the blood vessels. The heat causes the vessels to contract and be broken down naturally by the body. - Pigment problems
The light is absorbed by excess pigment. This damages the pigment cells, causing them to be broken down and shed through the skin's natural repair process. - Acne
The light has an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect on the sebaceous glands, reducing acne. - Hair removal
The light is absorbed by melanin in the hair follicle. This heats and damages the hair follicle, leading to hair reduction
Where does IPL work?
IPL is suitable for various indications and is applied to the face, neck, cleavage, arms and hands and sometimes other parts of the body. Settings are adjusted for each indication. Among other things, it helps with:
- Rosacea
- Couperose
- Diffuse redness
- Pigmentation spots
- Age spots
- Acne and acne scars
- Vascular red scars
- Unwanted hair growth

Consultation
During the consultation, the doctor or skin therapist will go through your wishes and corresponding treatment techniques with you in detail and advise you on the best way to achieve an effective result. You will also receive information about the realistic result to be expected, possible side effects and risks, and the costs. Your doctor or skin therapist will draw up your individual treatment plan and you will sign the informed consent with detailed information about the treatment.
Before treatment
For 4 weeks before treatment, skin should not be directly exposed to sunlight or tanning beds and self-tanner or tanning spray. If exposed to UV radiation, protect the skin daily with SPF 50+ and reapply every two hours. If you do get a tan, it is better to wait a few more weeks for laser treatments until your original skin colour returns. If this advice is not followed, the risk of complications is higher for sunburn and pigmentation.
Treatment
During an IPL treatment, settings will be tailored to your skin type and indication. Before the treatment begins, your eyes are protected with special safety glasses. A cooling gel is then applied to the area to be treated. This gel ensures good light conduction and protects the skin.
During the treatment, controlled pulses of light are delivered to the skin. The energy from these pulses is absorbed by specific structures in the skin. The treatment is generally well tolerated and is often described as a warm feeling or small, warm pricks on the skin.
After the treatment, the skin can be cooled immediately with a cold pack to soothe any redness or heat.
After the treatment
After IPL treatment, the skin is extra sensitive to sunlight. It is therefore important to properly protect the skin with a sunscreen with SPF 50 for at least four weeks, reapplying it every two hours.
In treatments for vascular disorders, it is important not to drink alcohol, shower hot or use a sauna for the first 24 hours after treatment. These activities can dilate blood vessels, which may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
With pigment treatments, it is normal for pigment spots to first darken in the days after treatment. This is often followed by a scab, which will peel off on its own. It is important not to scratch or pick at scabs or skin, to avoid scarring.
For optimal results, it is important to carefully follow the living rules and advice in the aftercare leaflet. After 4 to 6 weeks, we would like to see you back at the clinic for a check-up or repeat treatment.
Side effects
After IPL treatment, mild, temporary side effects may occur, such as mild swelling, redness and a burning or warm feeling. Sometimes, small bruises may also appear.
Pigment treatments may temporarily darken the pigment, and superficial crusting may occur. It is important not to pull or pick at these sheets or scabs, so as not to disrupt the natural repair process and to avoid pigment shifts or scarring. These reactions are normal and usually disappear within a week.
Result
Several treatment sessions are usually required for optimal results. Vascular treatments require an average of 3 to 5 treatments. Treatment of pigment requires 1 to 3 treatments. The treatments have an interval of 4 to 6 weeks.
